Do You Really Need a Hair & Makeup Trial?
When a preview is worth every minute, when you can skip it, and exactly what to bring so you leave knowing the look is right.
A trial isn’t required, but it’s worth it for most brides, especially if you’re trying a new look, have specific inspiration, wear extensions or lashes, or simply want peace of mind. You can comfortably skip it for a soft, natural look or when you already trust your artist. Book it 2–3 months before the wedding, and bring inspiration photos, your accessories, and a white or light top.
A trial (or preview) is a full run-through of your wedding hair and makeup before the day. It’s the single best way to walk into your morning with zero doubt about the look. But is it mandatory? No. And here’s how to decide.
What a trial actually is
It’s a dedicated appointment where we create your full bridal look start to finish, adjust it together in real light, and photograph it the way it’ll be photographed on the day. You leave with a look that’s documented and repeatable: we note every product, shade, and pin so the morning is a recreation, not an experiment.
When it’s worth every minute
- You have specific inspiration photos and want to be sure the look translates to your hair and features.
- You’re trying something new or different from your everyday style.
- You’re adding extensions, a veil, or lashes and want to test how they sit.
- You tend to feel nervous about being photographed and want to see the finish in advance.
- You’re booking an artist for the first time and want to build trust before the day.
When you can comfortably skip it
- You want a soft, natural look close to your everyday makeup.
- You’ve worked with the artist before and love their work.
- You’re fully relaxed and open to your artist’s expert judgment on the day.
How to get the most from your trial
- 01 Bring 2–3 inspiration photosReal images beat words. A few clear references tell us more than a paragraph ever could.
- 02 Prep your skin as you will for the dayMoisturized, freshly cleansed skin gives the truest preview of how makeup will sit.
- 03 Wear a white or light topIt mimics your dress and shows the look in honest color, not under a dark collar.
- 04 Take photos in natural lightStep outside and snap a few. It’s how you’ll really see the finish on camera.
- 05 Be honest in the chairIf something feels like too much or too little, say so. That’s exactly what the trial is for.
The goal of a trial isn’t a perfect look. It’s a look you no longer have to think about.
- A trial is optional, but worthwhile for most brides, especially for new or specific looks.
- You can skip it for a natural look or when you already trust your artist.
- Schedule it about 2–3 months before the wedding.
- Bring inspiration photos, your accessories, and wear a white or light top.
- Take photos in natural light and speak up. Adjustments now mean none on the day.
The short version
Is a bridal hair and makeup trial necessary?
It is not strictly required, but it is recommended for most brides, particularly if you have specific inspiration, are trying a new look, or want peace of mind. A natural look, or a returning client who trusts their artist, can comfortably skip it.
When should I schedule my trial?
About 2 to 3 months before the wedding is ideal: close enough that your hair length and overall vision are settled, with time to refine if needed.
What should I bring to a hair and makeup trial?
Bring two or three inspiration photos, any hair accessories or veil, your lashes or extensions if you’re using them, and wear a white or light-colored top so the look reads in honest color.
Can I do my hair and makeup trial on the same day?
Yes. Most brides do both together so they can see the complete look as it will appear on the wedding day, and photograph it in natural light.
How many looks can I try at a trial?
Typically one or two refined directions. A trial works best when you arrive with a clear idea so we can perfect a look, rather than starting from a blank page.
